The Union government will help Haryana with the development of silk weaving units, said Union textiles minister Smriti Irani. She also said that as Haryana has received proposals of investments up to Rs 7 lakh crore from various investors, the Centre will lend support to execute agreements that the state has signed for developing its textile sectors.

Both the Central and state governments will make efforts to promote the textile industry in Panipat, Ambala, Sirsa and Panchkula districts, said Irani while laying the foundation stone of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in Panchkula with Manohar Lal Khattar, chief minister of Haryana.

Irani also said that the state is doing a great job as it has secured a rank among the top five states when it comes to ease of doing business.

The NIFT centre will take about two years to be completed and its students will be guided by international experts, considering that it has entered into agreements with 32 global institutes. The new centre will be spread over an area of 10 acres and will cost about Rs 100 crore.

The institute will offer 6 regular degree courses and admit 230 students every year. 20 per cent of the seats will be reserved for the domiciles of Haryana.

Some of the courses that will be offered as part of the continuing education programme at the institute include a 4-year Bachelor of Design with major in textile of fashion design, a 4-year Bachelor of Fashion Technology with major in apparel production, a 2-year Master of Fashion Technology, 2-year Master of Design, 2-year Master of Fashion Management and a certificate programme of one and a half years.
