Concerned over losing investment, Punjab Government explores other land options for textile park

Following protests by ecologists and environment activists, the Punjab Government had recently scrapped the textile park project near Mattewara forest.

Now the State Government is concerned over losing investment worth Rs. 1,000 crore and employment avenues for scores of youths.

Union Ministry of Textiles Officials had inspected this land two months ago and suggested another connecting road apart from the existing one.

As per media reports, the State Government has yet not informed the Centre officially about the announcement to scrap the project.

It is being said that the State Government is now identifying another site. As per an official, Punjab has 1,700 acres of Guru Nanak Thermal Plant at Bathinda, besides having 800 acres in Gobindpura (Mansa).

The state official said “The debt-ridden state needed the investment, especially when the Government did not want to burden the residents with more taxes. Yet, we cannot let go of our investment. We will need such projects.”

For this project under the PM MITRA scheme, Punjab is in competition with 13 states who have applied for textile parks in 17 different cities. A total of 7 parks have been approved by the Union Government.
