The workers of Cambodian garment factories, through their association, plan to propose an increase in minimum wages between US $ 200 and US $ 250.
The Workers’ Democratic Union, better known as WDU, has also urged other unions to come together and support them in their effort to negotiate with the government.
It is pertinent to note that a garment worker in Cambodia currently earns US $ 165 monthly in addition to US $ 5 amount from the government every month.
WDU plans to meet the government officials on 20 August to discuss on the proposal. Corroborating on the same, Ath Thorn, WDU President, said that he was hopeful of government’s continual support to the workers.
The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training recently announced that later in August there will be a meet to discuss the minimum wage for 2019 for the workers across garment and footwear sector.
The ministry has, meanwhile, asked the workers, employers, public and the vocational training institutes to give their input prior to the commencement of the negotiations.
