The Government of India has the upliftment of artisans, weavers and the textile industry on its agenda and Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Arjun Ram Meghwal, has made suggestions in that direction.

The minister has emphasised the importance of upgradation of technology and the weavers adopting such advanced technology in order to stay relevant and diversify products in today’s tough market conditions.

Another opportunity that has presented itself in a time where we need more sustainable options is the banning of single-use plastic bags by the Government. This will in turn increase the demand for cloth bags, helping weavers.

While addressing the inaugural session of a two-day event on ‘weavers cultural heritage preservation’ in Varanasi on Sunday (22 September), Meghwal said, “Technological upgradation and changes should be adopted in weaving sector and weavers should be provided a proper training for the same. Technological linkage with inherent art is an ideal way to ensure development. Exploit the available knowledge and develop skill with the latest technological linkage.”

While stating how technological upgradation can help in finding ways to save and develop the handloom industry, Meghwal said“I am from weavers fraternity and am aware of the challenges being faced by the industry. It is a known fact that financial condition of weavers, especially in handloom sector, is not good.”

He added “Tackling marketing challenges through product diversification may help  ending the problem of minimum wage in this sector.”He asked the weavers to recognise their skills and develop the sector.

On his experience of foreign visits he said,“Belief that machine-made clothes have adverse effects on skin is gaining momentum in developed countries following which demand for handloom products is rising.” Handloom art is also helpful in environment protection, he said highlighting how designs and different arts of weaving including Kadwa art are still in demand across the world.
