H&M motivates exporters on GFA; exporters have reservations on trade unions

Focusing on global framework agreement (GFA), H&M recently held workshops in Delhi and Bengaluru where most of its Indian suppliers were present.

The four-hour-long workshops delved deep into various aspects of GFA.

Negotiated on a global level between trade unions and multinational companies, GFAs serve to protect the interests of workers across multinational company’s operations. IndustriALL has existing GFAs with many global brands and retailers like H&M, Inditex, ASOS and Esprit.

H&M is working with most of the top-level apparel exporters of India, and its suppliers in North India are strongly of the view that points related to trade unions are not viable on the ground level.

A top-level official of an export house present in the workshop said “Normally trade unions are meant for the benefit of the factory as well as the workers, but in North India they (trade unions) have only one agenda – to make money for themselves. Exporters like us have fairly elected worker committees and full transparency; therefore we have our reservations regarding GFA’s trade union aspect.”

He further added that the National Monitoring Committee (NMC) should focus on industry rather than unions. The exporters, however, agreed that they have to increase transparency in their overall working.

H&M and IndustriALL representatives urged exporters to follow all labour laws. It is pertinent to mention here that H&M is working with more than 100 companies in India across all major hubs.

“H&M and IndustryAll have assured further training for unions as well as factory managements on various issues be it industrial relations, peaceful grievances redressal, etc. Let’s see how things move in future,” shared another exporter who attended this workshop but didn’t wish to quote.
