Leading Indian apparel export house Orient Craft (OC) gets recognised as ‘Champion of CSR’ by UK’s third-largest supermarket chain Sainsbury’s and Comic Relief (UK-based NGO).
OC’s various initiatives for its workers including women empowerment and gender sensitivity have played a big role to get this recognition.
In a recent supplier workshop of Sainsbury’s organised at Delhi, Archana Tomar Mann, VP-Sustainability, OC and Shivani Bhardwaj from sustainability team of the company presented the business case/value of CSR programmes and the socio-economic impact it has on the business of other Sainsbury’s suppliers who are yet to buy into CSR programmes or who have been hardest to engage around this issue.
In this workshop, a talk show was organised by Megha Kapoor, Sainsbury’s Compliance Officer – India & Sri Lanka in which OC’s workers from Chopanki and Manesar units also participated and shared the impact of CSR programmes in their life.
The talk show was a powerful process for suppliers to understand the ‘the other side of the story’ and the experiences shared were articulate, personal and exactly what was needed to understand how change is experienced at all levels, not only within the factory, but individually in their families and their community.
Vipin Wattal, Country Head, India and Sri Lanka, Sainsbury’s led the workshop, which also saw the presence of Pooja Dhingra, Director, OC.
