Punjab may get mega textile park!

news image

If things remain positive, Punjab, one of the leading textile states of India, may get a mega textile park.

The Ministry of Textiles (MoT) has proposed 10 mega textile parks across India. Notably, Tamil Nadu, another leading textile state, is expected to get one such park.

A delegation of Northern India Textile Mills’ Association (NITMA), one of the prominent trade associations, met Ministry of Textiles (MoT) in this regard and importantly MoT has shown positive response on the same.

Punjab has textile eco-system and leading local companies do have the potential to invest at a large level. Some of the Punjab-based companies already have major operations in other states and are continuously investing out of Punjab.

If Punjab gets this park, it can act as a textile growth hub across the entire Northern region to drive the textile eco-system, surrounded by clusters like Ludhiana, for sustainably generating employment and exports for future.

An NITMA delegation led by Sanjay Garg, President, NITMA along with Mukesh Kumar Tyagi, Sr. Vice President; Sidharth Khanna, Director, Arisudana Industries Ltd.; Dr. Ravinder Verma, MD, Ganga Acrowools Ltd. and Anil Kumar Vasupillai, SG, NITMA highlighted the demand in their meeting with Ravi Capoor, Textiles Secretary.

Textiles Secretary, who was happy with the industry response concerning the mega textile park, suggested that NITMA should work closely with the Ministry and the State Government for successfully realising the vision.

Sanjay Garg, President, NITMA told Apparel Resources, “It is very difficult to get 1,000 acres of land in established hubs like Ludhiana, and the industry might not shift or invest outside Ludhiana. So, keeping these things in mind, we will soon approach senior officials of State Government and Invest Punjab.”

He added “The spinning sector might not invest as Punjab’s textile policy, compared to that of Maharashtra and Gujarat, is less favourable for the industry. But down the line, all other segments be it knitters, weavers or garment manufacturers must invest well in such parks as overall they are doing well.”

He also said “If we get land, it will create lot of employment and will ultimately benefit Punjab.”

T. Rajkumar, Chairman, Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI), has appreciated this scheme and said, “The proposed Mega Textile Park Scheme would throw more opportunities for the textile industry to cater to domestic markets and also international market.”
