The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has requested the Commerce Ministry to ban the import of silk and silk products from China, alleging that the import of these is hurting the local silk industry in India.
KVIC chairman VK Saxena in a letter to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, said, “Despite being the world’s second largest producer of silk and the largest consumer of raw silk and silk fabrics, the import of low cost and low-quality Chinese silk including artificial silk products negatively impacts the demand of Indian silk in its own markets.”
Earlier this year, KVIC had inagurated the maiden silk processing plant at Surendranagar (Gujarat). The objective was to significantly reduce the cost of silk yarn production. And not just that!
The aim was also enhance the sale and availability of raw material of Patola sarees (Gujarat) locally.
Notably, the silk processing plant was built at a cost of Rs. 75 lakh, with KVIC’s contribution being Rs. 60 lakh.
